Build Good Character!!!

Students, students, students!!! When will our youngster learn to appreciate what others were doing for them?

Just yesterday, I represented my SH to attend a bursary award from the Singapore Buddhist Lodge Education Foundation. This foundation was kind enough to give bursary to students regardless of race and religion. But this is not the main point. The main point I wanted to bring out was the attitude of some who went up on stage to receive their bursary award. They were given a sum of money for this award so that it could help them to pursue their studies with lesser burden to them financially.

The way some of them who went up to accept the award, I cannot explain in words! Their attitude was, I deserved it, it is rightfully mine, just give it to me, not interested to show thanks or appreciation etc, One of the even come in those 3/4 pants (it is a boy!!!) or what you may call a Bermuda!!! Come on man, show some respect to these people who had work hard to raise money for such people!!! At that moment I wished I could give that boy a tight SLAP!!! No it wasn’t that he cannot afford a pant, in fact many came in school uniform, it was just his attitude, you could even see it from his facial expression.

And sad to add on, most of those who expressed such attitude are ITE students (from all over the colleges). It is saddening to see our students like that. As one of my students requested me to write something about her class, so I am going to make some comments and hopefully they will not be hurt by this writing. To the students of this class, you may have noticed that I no longer leave my sweets on my table. You may think that I am a little stingy as how much does a sweet cost? No it is not about cots but rather about character building. In the beginning, these students will ask for permission before taking the sweets, but somehow, they began to develop a bad character, they just come over to my table and take without permission. Even when I am not around, they assume that it is theirs to take. So they just take and walk away!!! Hello, I don’t owe you anything! What is mine is mine; it does not belong to you. It is ok to take if you had asked my permission! The sweets were, after all, meant for my students. But when I began to notice that they start developing such bad characters, I decides to put a stop! No longer do I leave my sweets on my table. If you want one, KINDLY ASK!!! Don’t make it a habit that you can take from others as you wished, without asking. Show respect for other people belonging!!!

I hope the class that is reading this blog, will understand my action. As I says, how much is a sweets? It is peanuts man!!! But if ever I see that something is shaping you in the wrong path, I will take action, whether you like it or not! If you are offended with today’s blog, too bad! No, seriously, I had meant for good that you will learn from things that I do.

So that’s all for today, rather long.
