Yesterday, was the first time that ICT dept had a parent's day where we meet parents for a dialogue. As I mingle with parents from our dept, I can feel a strong vibe from them, that they were very concerned about their child's future. Questions were flowing fast and quick about their child future such as, after ITE then what?, what are the chances of going to poly? if not poly then what about higher nitec? will they have to be enlisted to NS before furthering their studies? any possibililties of getting a degree? etc. I was indeed very glad to see that the parents were all anxious about their child. But sad to says, I feel that the children react in the opposite manner.
Let me relate an incident last night. It wasn't from my class but I happen to listen to the heartbeat of this parent. He was relating about his work. Every project undertaken by his company, he had to undergo 3 test before he is allowed to be part of the tem in the project. This was due to the fact that he lacks "paper" qualification. Can you imagine, the agony he had to go through every time his company get a project? He will not be able to earn a living and his family will falls in financial problem. Everytime, he can only keep trying until he pass, then he would be able to work!!! But his son shows no concern about it, he just adopt a "I don't care attitude" while his father was pouring out his heart to that teacher! His father was trying to tell him to put his heart into his studies so that he would not end up like him. But instead of being touched by his father, he simply doesn't bother!!!
Hellooooo!!!!!!! One day you all will be father or mother. You will fell that agony if you have such a child. It is so easy not to bother about your future as most of you have almost everything provided for. A roof over your head, clothes to keep you warm, money to spend as you like, food to fill your stomach etc. But what will happen one day when you need to fend for yourself? Can you earn enough money to buy a house or simply to rent a house? Will there be food on the table for your future famliy? Will they go hungry for days without food to eat? This is the reality! How often we had read in newspaper about family going without light and water because they have no money to pay their utilities bill, or kid just surviving on water and some moldy bread for their meals? Maybe one day I should bring our students to visit the one "roomers", those living in a one room flat. I had seem from my own eyes how a lady was surviving on packet food from her neighbour and cockroaches running all over, ants crawling on those empty foam boxes.
To all my young reader. It is time to pull up your socks and starts thinking about your future! You all may be young but not too young to start making plans so that you will at least pass and have a NITEC cert. Please do listen as you finish reading this blog.
