What A Teacher!!!

It never fails to surprise me whenever I read articles of teachers caught in some unhealthy acts. Did you read last Sunday Newpaper? The headline screams something like this. “Teacher made me pregnant and makes me go for abortion…”

It seems that nowadays teachers are employed based on their qualification with no measure of their characters or moral values. I know, it is difficult to gauge a person from the interview, but I believe that MOE should stress across very clearly to any prospective teacher the consequences of any immoral acts.

To me this teacher had fallen badly, so badly that if I am in MOE shoe, I will give an immediate termination, no investigation needed.

First, here was a teacher, 27 years old having an affair with a 16 years old girl from his school. As teacher, it is very easy to influence a student from the same school. Whether he is teaching that class or not, as long as you have certain contact with the class, then your influence is strongly felt by the students. So it is no excuse to say that since I am not teaching the class, then it is OK. Sorry, it is not OK!!!

Secondly, how can you be having sex with a girl of such age? You are telling the world that is it Ok to have pre marital sex. How powerful can this message be, especially if it comes from the mouth and the action if such a teacher? Hello, I am not asking you to be an angel? But how can you do it with your student? Such student are so easily impressionable and by doing so, you are telling the whole school, that it is OK to sleep around, there is nothing wrong with it. What sort of values are you imparting?

Thirdly, by asking the girl to go for abortion, you are inculcating a very wrong moral values. You are not teaching our youngster the value and the preciousness of a life. You are telling them that it is not wrong to take away a life, as long as it does not hinder your life. My goodness, don’t you know that life is precious? As a Chinese saying that I heard very often from my parent, “We as living things, ought to preserve our lives and not to seek to destroy oneself” We as teachers ought to teach our students to learn to treasure life and not to kill life through such means.

Lastly, we must learn to take responsibilities of our actions and should never equate it with what others did. It was in the report that he says, I too see other teacher smoking and go clubbing…, so what is wrong with what I did? No I am not condoning such acts, but what other had been doing does not mean that the wrong he does is OK. It does not mean that since other rob, so it is OK for me to steal!!!

I can go on and on, on what he did is immoral, but I will stop here and allows my students to ponder over what I wrote and hopefully, they will learn from this incident and grow to be a better person.
