Disturbed and Encouraged!!!

One thing that had always been a source of discouragement to me is students' attitude. It always happen without fail.

A few days back when I was trying to encourage the students to work hard so that they can go poly through their GPA score, there was this students with all sorts of remarks, such as "Not interested", "No use one lah!" etc and was creating a mini scene disturbing those around him. And I always had the same reply to such students. Without fail, there are always such students when I explain the GPA option for elective and at the end of their studies, they will come to the lecturer pleading for assistance to go poly, even with a GPA score of less than 2! When reality set in, they panic and looks for ways and means to go poly when they see their friends all progressing to Poly. Now they act "yaya", you know what I mean?, It meant that they try to show that it does not matter even if they score a GPA of only 1, they seems to says that they are not interested to progress on in their study. It is only when the 2 years are up, then they see their pathetic situation. Too bad, it's late!!!

Such scene had always been repeating again and again! I always ask myself, why do students adopt such attitude. After going through their "N" level or not too well "O" level, they should be in a position to know that they need to put in as much effort as possible so that they can break the so called "low class" students!!! This is their life time opportunity to progress further in their studies. If they missed such a chance, they may never have another opportunity again!

So much for students and now a short note on my fellow colleagues. Had a few students who came to me saying that they have difficulties understanding a particular subject (will not say which). So I made arrangement for another staff to conduct extra lessons for this class. Went to have a talk with this staff, and unfortunately, the staff was very hurt over this issue. Not my intention to hurt or discourage him, just trying to let him know that what I am trying to do was for the benefit of the students so that they can be better prepared for the coming exam. I understand the feelings of this staff. It was a chicken and egg issue. Students had problem understanding the lesson so they did not turn up for the class, and the staff cannot be helping then when they are not around. The staff was so discourage and I could see that he almost break down, (hello don't guess that it must be a lady, man also can leh!, so don't guess), so later that night drop the staff a short note of encouragement. Thankfully, that staff responded positive, replying with a thank you note and that he was very much encouraged.

No, don't read this note with the thinking that I am trying to boast. Not my intention. Wrote this so that all who reads will drop note of encouragement to all your friends or family members who feel down. In this age of high tech, no matter where we are, we can still be a source of encouragement to others, a source of blessing to others through a simple email or sms that is readily available to us.

This is a long blog, hopefully it had blessed all who reads.

Don't Go Overboard!

2 days back, an incident woke me to the danger of overdoing things. Not sure whether the rest of the class saw what happen.

It happen throughout the lesson before it almost explode into a uncontrollable situation. Anyone know what I am talking about? No, then read on! (That's how you keep your reader suspense!!!!!! and make sure they read your blog. Hahahahaha)

Well, it happen in the class when a group of students keep making fun of one of the student. They probably did not know that this student was an austitic student, ie the student had problem relating to others. Such a person will suddenly scream, shout, or react violently when provoke. So this group of student were having fun, provoking this student throughout the lesson. When lesson ended, one of them continue while the rest stopped. It was at near the door that suddenly this austitic student exploded. This austitic student pointed the finger at the other student. My goodness, you should see the trembling finger, it was shaking so badly, that i really believe if this student start whacking the other student, this student will end up in hospital!!!. Quickly, I chased the other student out of the class and tried to cool down this austitic student.

So you see, we must never over do whatever we do. We do not realise the danger that we are putting ourselves in when we does things overboard. Let this be a lesson to all who reads! As they says, if you forced a cat to a corner, it will turn around and bite you back!!! Surely you do not want this to happen!!! So BE GOOD

Stop Using Those 4 Letter Words

Was shocked out of my life last week, when i read my daughter's blog. She was using a word that i would never expect her to use. It disturbed me so much that i had a bad night. Knowing that if i talk to her on the same day, it will make things worst

Always believe that we ought to give other some psace, and so i did just that and only have a chat with her only the next day, when she is more "cooled" I beleve she must have understand how i felt about her writting and she will changed.

Not only my daugher was using words that I do not expect, as I read some of my students's blog, it is always disturbing. Four letter words are a norm. Why can't our youngster be more gracious, do they always think that it is cool to have such profanities flowing out of their mouth? They may think that it is normal. To all students who blog, pls do not think that you are hiding behind the net and you can say wat you like? Others are reading and you are influencing the others. How would you like it, if your sons and daughters are to come home and start using all these 4 letter words. Would you enjoy it as a father or mother? I doubt so. So if you do not want your future kids to use such words, then it's about time that you stop using such words. I even had a student laughing away when using such words, that student think it was cool, as no one was using it. To me, IT WAS DISGUSTING!!!!

So much for using such words. Anyway, if you had read me earlier blog of students having misunderstanding, thankfully, thing are working out and they are on talking terms, still need more time to be back to normal. If you are one of those involved, give yourself a pat on the back for taking up the courage to patch things instead of shutting up. Well done!!

To all who are feverishly preparing for your exam, good luck, but fear not, I am trying to get all of you enrolled into the e-tutor that have online lesson on your engineering essential module. Probably will be ready this week. That's all for today

Hey, Be More Appreciative

Yeterday was listening to my daughter comments about how "we" the older generation was so unappreciatively of the younger generation. So is it true?

To me, IT IS DEFINITELY NOT TRUE!!!! Only today in the morning, was a little cheese off with the attitute of the students. There Mr Ong wa strying os hard to explain, and here the students were playing CS to their heart content!!! Tell me, who is not appreciative of who? Can see that though Mr Ong was still trying to recover from his bad throat, he still try his best to teach. HELLO, YOU ALL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS CALL APPRECIATION???????? Worst still, after he finished, the students then come and ask for personal teaching. TOO MUCH LAH!!!! Pls understand, not that we are not willing to give extra coaching, WE ARE ALWAYS PREPARE TO GIVE EXTRA COACHING, but it will be done if the students had shown that they have tried understanding but still have problems after that, not for them to play CS then asked later.

So you see, I think i had proven my daughter wrong, it is more of the case of youngster nowadays don't appreciate the older generation. I may sound a lttle harsh here, but sometimes we teacher had to be harshed for the sake of students, if not they will never learn.

I think I better not write some more, if not tomorrow, all of you will start throwing rotten eggs at me for being so harsh!!!! hahahaha
